Clue 3 – Treasure Hunt

Sir William Hillary, born in 1771 in Liverpool, England, was a notable philanthropist and founder of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Although originally from a Quaker family in Liverpool, Hillary spent much of his life on the Isle of Man. His vision and dedication to saving lives at sea were instrumental in the establishment of organized lifeboat services in the United Kingdom.

Hillary moved to the Isle of Man in 1808, seeking a quieter life after a career that included military service and a brief foray into politics. It was here, in Douglas Bay, that he witnessed numerous shipwrecks and the resulting loss of life, which deeply affected him. Motivated by these tragedies, he began advocating for a national lifeboat service.

In 1823, Hillary published a pamphlet titled “An Appeal to the British Nation on the Humanity and Policy of Forming a National Institution for the Preservation of Lives and Property from Shipwreck.” His appeal garnered significant support, and in 1824, the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was founded. This organization would later be renamed the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in 1854, receiving royal patronage from Queen Victoria.

Hillary’s commitment to the cause was not just administrative; he was actively involved in rescues. He participated in several daring sea rescues and was awarded a gold medal for bravery by the RNLI for his efforts. One of his notable rescues involved saving the crew of the Royal Mail steam packet St George in 1830.

Throughout his life, Sir William Hillary remained dedicated to the cause of maritime safety. He continued to support and promote the RNLI until his death in 1847 on the Isle of Man. His legacy lives on, with the RNLI remaining a crucial institution in maritime rescue operations around the British Isles.
