Careers Ashore

Shipowners need effective shipbrokers, lawyers, bankers and insurers. These business services – many with a global reach – are a vital part of the maritime industry, and a vast number of service companies are based on the Isle of Man and across the UK.

In support of seafarers’ career development, the MNTB has created an interactive career map which provides an outline of some of the career opportunities that are available at sea and ashore. These opportunities are not exclusive or exhaustive within each sector as there are a variety of roles and job titles within each.  All profiles within the map have been provided by individuals across the maritime industry using their own experiences of being at sea and their roles ashore.

This range of activities means the IOM & UK is often seen as a ‘one stop shop’ for maritime matters.

Many people enter these sectors after a career at sea, but many more choose to enter shipping having established themselves in professional services. It means graduates in law, economics, finance and many other disciplines – many of whom have never thought about a maritime career – find themselves becoming a crucial part of the industry.

Business services companies are committed to their workforce, and there is a strong culture of continuing professional development, underpinned by world-renowned integrity.

Current roles in maritime ashore include:

  • Port operations (agency, vessel operations, chandlery stevedoring, customs)
  • Commercial (shipbroking, chartering, sale & purchase)
  • Operations (crewing, surveying, superintendent)
  • Legal (P&I, loss adjustor, arbitration, marine insurance)
  • Regulatory (marine surveyor, MCA, Port State Control, UK Border Force)
  • Shipbuilding (naval architect, boatbuilder)
