Despite the challenges posed by a global pandemic, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company‘s years of planning and preparation have finally come to fruition, resulting in a remarkable new flagship vessel, the Manxman.
I was recently one of the lucky people to get to experience the vessel’s maiden voyage on Thursday 17th August, which sailed from the Isle of Man to Heysham and back.
Setting Sail
As the sun graced the sky on what was a beautiful morning, I made my way to the Douglas sea terminal, filled with anticipation for the journey ahead.
Upon arrival, I was swiftly checked- in, receiving a delightful passport memento to commemorate the special day before being guided through security and on to the ship.
Exploration and Delight
Once on board, I headed straight to the lounge to secure my seat and began to discover the wonders of the two passenger decks.
The vessel’s design includes breath-taking lounges and public areas that are simply awe-inspiring. After indulging in a delicious bacon sandwich and savouring a latte, I found myself utterly enchanted by the café, a light and comfortable space offering delectable food. One shouldn’t miss the mouth-watering peppered steak pie!
Artistic Marvels
The artwork also captivated my attention. Throughout the ship are various pieces of art by talented Manx artists, each showcasing the essence of the Isle of Man brilliantly. It was lovely to explore such beautiful pieces; they added an extra layer of charm to my voyage. My favourite piece is on Deck 8 where pictures hang on the bulkheads as you walk through the vessel to the aft end.
An Unforgettable Experience
I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the various lounges, pet-friendly areas, shops, and open decks and would highly recommend a visit to the bar, where you can indulge in the finest Manx produce. It’s a wonderful opportunity to savour the flavours of the Island while taking in the stunning views on offer from the ship.
