Remembering Captain David Cowell

It is with deep respect and sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Captain David Cowell, a true maritime legend on the Isle of Man.

David dedicated his life to the sea, rising through the ranks to Master before becoming the Island’s Chief Harbour Master. His impact on the maritime industry was profound—most notably, his instrumental role in shaping the legislation that established the Isle of Man as an international Flag State in 1984. Without his expertise, diligence, and vision, the success of the Isle of Man Ship Registry would not have been possible.

Following his retirement, David continued to serve the maritime community as the Isle of Man’s Commissioner on the Northern Lighthouse Board from 1991 to 2004, ensuring the safety of mariners around our waters.

Pictured above with past and present NLB Commissioners, Captain Mike Brew and Dick Welsh MBE, David’s legacy will live on in the industry he helped build and the many lives he touched.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Captain Cowell’s family and friends during this time.

Fair winds and following seas, Captain.
